Medieval Festival
Gr.3-8 - Room 128 - Mrs. VanSolkema
Students will be immersed in the color and pageantry of the Middle Ages
in this class, that covers the European society from 600-1450.Students
will learn about different aspects of medieval life, becoming lords and
ladies, monks, knights, crusaders, serfs, and craftspeople. Students may
illuminate passages from literature after becoming "brothers"
in a monastery, or map out a fief and manor after taking an oath of homage
to the lord and lady of the manor. All this and more will make the culminating
activity of a Medieval Festival come to life!
Economics: Show Me the Money!
Gr.6-8 - Room 127- Mrs. Bullock
From the history of money, to how our economic system works, students
will learn everything there is to know about how money helps our world
to work. Keeping a checkbook, and making change are two of the fun activities
that students will master in this exciting and motivating class, where
kids learn skills they can use in the real world.
Amazing World Geography
Gr.3-8 - Room 126 - Mrs. Denning
Students will learn world geography in a fun way through hands-on mapping
and presentation activities. During the course of this class students
will:
" Learn to read maps of different scales and with various symbols
" Learn to use an atlas
" Understand latitude and longitude
" Become aware of the relationship between geography, cultures, global
issues and themselves
" Be able to use a globe to help explain the seasons, the rotation
of the earth and the tropics
Theater Magic
Grades 3-5 - Room 122- Mrs. Layton
This is the second in the series of theater magic classes, but you don't
have to know anything about theater or production to get involved! Students
will learn to perform, through a variety of different and amusing activities
that will both help and motivate them to become more self-confident in
front of an audience. Students will understand the different roles within
the theater, becoming the director, the properties manager, choreographer,
script writer, actor and actress for different performances. So we encourage
students to join this class and "break a leg!"

Fantasy Fiction
Grades 3-8 - Room 128- Mrs. Van Solkema
Students who love to read about monsters, mythical beasts and futuristic
places will love this class. Students will read, analyze and discuss four
fantasy novels by well-known children's authors. Parents will be responsible
for providing the following books for the class, which can be purchased
or borrowed from the school library or your local library. Please call
Mrs. Van Solkema if you have problems procuring the books:

WWII & The Holocaust
Grades 6-8 - Room 127- Mrs. Bullock
Students will take a serious look at World War II and what enabled Hitler
to come into power. By the conclusion of this class, students will:
" Understand what the relationship between the U.S. and Nazi Germany
was like from 1933 to 1939
" Be able to detail how the actions of Nazi Germany influenced U.S.
foreign policy.
" Know what the response of the U.S. Government and non-governmental
organizations to the unfolding events of the Holocaust were.
" Understand what role the U.S. played in the war crimes trials.

Students will be preassessed by the teacher, and placed at the appropriate
level in math. Students will then have the opportunity to work in the
award winning CompassLearningOdyssey computer-based program. This program
will take students through activities, at their own, individual skill
levels that are fun, animated and interactive. Students will love to learn
math through this self-paced, creative and educational program!
10:00-11:00 Courses:
Renaissance/Individualized Math
Gr.6-8 - Room 125 - Mrs. Rumsey
Students will be preassessed by the teacher, and placed at the appropriate
level. Work is computer generated. Students will move through the curriculum
at their own pace. The teacher will work with individuals or small groups
to teach math concepts as students progress through the curriculum. This
program is excellent for reinforcing math taught at home.
Chess Club
Gr.3-8 - Room 127 - Mrs. Bullock
Students who are interested in learning to play a friendly game of chess
or who would like to learn to compete will thrive in this environment!
This class will provide students with the instruction they need to play
a game of chess with a friend or to get involved in broader competitions
at the regional and national levels.
Manuscript, Cursive & Calligraphy
Gr. 3-8 - Room 126 - Mrs. Denning
The manuscript and cursive writing program selected for this class is
research-based and designed specifically to teach penmanship, both manuscript
and cursive, the correct way through specific exercises. Students will
practice writing manuscript and cursive letters in context of phonically
consistent patterns rather than in isolation, within unrelated words.
As the students progress, calligraphy lessons will also be provided. It's
a great way to learn to spell and write legibly.
The Golden Age of Exploration
Gr. 3-8 - Room 128 - Mrs. Van Solkema
"The world is flat!" was proclaimed by many for hundreds of
years, until The Golden Age of Exploration began in the fifteenth century,
and sailors from Europe ventured out and explored the world, locating
routes across its oceans and continents and defining the earth's physical
shape, size, and positions.
Students will study the explorations of the Portuguese the Spanish, the
English and more, as they learn the stories and history of how men explored
the geography and cultures of the world in which we live.

Sports Math
Gr. 6-8 - Room 125 - Mrs. Rumsey
You may never have thought about the math in sports, but just consider
it.... Every sport uses numbers in some way, whether it's for scoring,
determining averages, or figuring percentages. And when numbers are involved,
it usually means math. How could you play a friendly game of basketball
without knowing how to keep score? How could you figure out your best
friend's batting average? How would you know how many pins you needed
to knock down in the last two frames of a bowling game in order to beat
your opponent? The answers to these questions and more will be resolved
in this fabulous and fun math class!
History's Mysteries
Gr.3-8 - Room 127 - Mrs. Bullock
Many of life's great mysteries remain unsolved, and there are some lesser
known ones that also have stumped researchers for centuries. These perennial
riddles, that remain puzzling to this day, will be analyzed in this interesting
class on the mysteries of history. Students will learn about the lesser
known mysteries, like the Rongorongo hieroglyphics, the lost city of Helike,
and the bog bodies, as well as the more celebrated mysteries that include
the Easter Island statues, Stonehenge and the Nazca Lines. All in all,
it will be an interesting look at civilizations many and varied accomplishments
during times when the skills it took to complete such tasks were little
known.
Accelerated Reading
Gr. 3-8 - Room 126 - Mrs. Denning
Accelerated Reading is a computer program, which provides preassessment
for placement. Students will be placed in an appropriate reading level,
and will receive a list of books from which to choose their independent
reading. Parents must obtain books for their own children, or students
must check them out at the Eagleridge/Sunridge library. Independent reading,
monitored by a teacher, is the core of the class. Students take comprehension
tests in class. They are also responsible for 30 minutes of daily reading
outside of class. Students will be moved through the reading levels as
they show progress. Regular reports of progress will be sent home with
students.
Chorus
Gr. 3-8 - Room 122 - Mrs. Layton
Students who love to sing will enjoy the artistic and creative fun of
being involved in a chorus. Students will have the opportunity to learn
American classics as they collaborate to make beautiful music! A production
for parents and classmates will make this class especially enriching for
all involved.
12:30-1:30 Courses:
Pre-Algebra
Gr.6-8- Room 125 - Mrs. Rumsey
This class is great as a pre-cursor to Algebra I. Students will learn
the basics required to help them understand the concepts necessary to
be successful in algebra and higher level math. The Merrill Pre-Algebra
text will provide students with information about the language of algebra,
integers, solving equations, factors and fractions.
Debate
Gr. 3-8 - Room 127 - Mrs. Bullock
Webster's Dictionary tells us that debate is "a contention by words
or arguments: as a : the formal discussion of a motion before a deliberative
body according to the rules of parliamentary procedure b : a regulated
discussion of a proposition between two matched sides." Students
will learn this and much more as they discover that debating is not just
arguing with a friend. Vocabulary, rules and the art of speaking convincingly
on a particular side of a resolution will be just part of the many skills
experienced in this exciting and practical class.
CompassLearning Language Arts
Gr. 3-8 - Room 116 - Mrs. Layton
Students will be preassessed by the teacher, and placed at the appropriate
level in language arts. Students will then have the opportunity to work
in the award winning
CompassLearningOdyssey computer-based program. This program will take
students through activities, at their own, individual, skill levels that
are fun, animated and interactive. Students will love language arts, which
include reading and writing skills, as they learn through this self-paced,
creative and educational program!
Reader's Theater
Gr. 3-8 - Room 126 - Mrs. Denning
Drama is not only fun and natural for children; it also encourages emotional
growth, motivation, and engagement. And one form of drama, known as Reader's
Theater, has been found to be particularly effective in building reading
skills. Reader's Theater can also boost listening and speaking skills,
enhance confidence, and transform reluctant readers into book lovers.
Once the students start, they will fall in love with this kind of reading
and you will almost certainly see gains in your child's fluency, comprehension
and vocabulary by the end of this class.
1:30-2:30 Courses:

Web Design
Gr.3-8 - Room 116 - Mrs. Layton
Students will love learning how to create their own webpages in this exciting
new multi-media class. Using Dreamweaver, a web design program, students
will learn how to add tables, text and graphics to web pages. The culminating
activity will be a real life group project where students design a community
service web page.
Jury Trials in the Classroom
Gr. 3-8- Room 127 - Mrs. Bullock
The classroom will be transformed into a courtroom and students will take
part in a great learning adventure! Through trial simulations, students
will delve into criminal and civil law, with motivating cases that mirror
situations in fairy tales, nursery rhymes, literature, and history. In
the roles of attorneys, members of the jury, defendants, witnesses, and
courtroom personnel, students will prepare and conduct cases. They will
learn to use statements of fact and witness affidavits to determine guilt
or innocence. Students will have the opportunity to learn critical thinking
by weighing opposing points of view. The exciting results will motivate
students to exercise their reasoning skills, polish their communication
skills, and apply knowledge of the legal system, through this exciting
classroom adventure.

Gr. 6-8 - Room 123 - Mrs. Stetka
Students will work individually and in groups to develop aerobic stamina,
strength and conditioning. They will learn agility, play games and enjoy
both indoor and outdoor activities that help them to become physically
fit individuals.
2:30-3:30 Courses:
Rhyme Time Fun - Poetry, Puzzles and More
Gr. 3-8 - Room 126 - Mrs. Denning
Poetry, word puzzles, rhyming games and more will be included in this
creative word play class. Students will develop new vocabulary, as they
enjoy the games and puns in this fun look at the English language. Be
prepared for hilarious rhymes, as your children learn to make plays on
words and jokes with rhyming words.
Mavis Beacon - Microsoft Office
Gr. 3-8 - Room 116 - Mrs. Layton
From the authors of the award winning "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing,"
comes "Mavis Beacon Teaches Microsoft Office." This great computer
software program provides all the detail and fun of the Mavis Beacon typing
program but in this case, students will learn all the secrets of Microsoft
Office. Watch out, parents, students will end up knowing tricks for formatting
a word processing document, inserting graphics, making a PowerPoint presentation
or creating labels that even you don't know!
The Solar System
Gr. 6-8 - Room 127 - Mrs. Bullock
Cooperative Space Exploration Teams will travel to each Solar Stop researching
the locations (planets, asteroids, comets, and meteors), writing about
them in their Space Explorer's Log, reading stories and completing a variety
of interactive activities. With the help of various references, students
will gather galactic facts and complete activities cooperatively and individually.
Independent reading will also be encouraged through two Space Race Book
Reports. The class culminates as teams take part in a Press Conference
and produce an original Space Race Playhouse Presentation.

Gr. 3-5 - Room 123 - Mrs. Stetka
Students will work individually and in groups to develop aerobic stamina,
strength and conditioning. They will learn agility, play games and enjoy
both indoor and outdoor activities that help them to become physically
fit individuals.
3:30-4:30 Courses:
Band
Gr. 3-8 - Room 122 - Mr. Hink
Students will learn to play a band instrument in this year-long class.
Piano, guitar and other stringed instruments are not part of the band
at Eagleridge. Students in the band will be required to practice independently,
at home, and participate in several combined beginning and advanced band
concerts, as well as playing with the band on Mondays. Band I & II
meet at the same time. The first half of the class is spent on beginning
band material and the second half of the class is more advanced.
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Gr. 3-8 - Room 116 - Mrs. Layton
Adobe Photoshop Elements is a great software package from the well-known
Adobe family of products. With this program students will learn to:
" Show off their creativity with inspiring ideas, tutorials, artwork
and templates
" Share photos in fun, interactive ways via invitation-only Online
Albums
" Edit photos to add to Powerpoint presentations, cards, family letters
and other fun communications
Electricity, Magnetism & More
Gr. 6-8 - Room 127 - Mrs. Bullock
Students will find this scientific study electrifying! They will study
the discovery of electricity, and conduct experiments in order to learn
about the components of an electric circuit, how electrons travel to make
an electric circuit, and the difference between an open and closed circuit.
Group problem solving activities will help students to explore static
electricity, circuits, magnetism, conductors, and more. As students come
up with solutions to electricity exploration activities, they will acquire
clues to the mystery of how electricity works and gain a deeper understanding
of the scientific method and why it is used. Students will keep a Science
Journal throughout the process to help them learn new vocabulary and in
order to compare the results of their experiments.
