8:00 - 9:00 Courses:

Virtual Field Trips
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. VanSolkema
In this class every day is a good day for a field trip! The class will take students on field trips to the sky, the earth, the rain forest and the sea. Through animations, and with illustrations, photos, and videos students will be able to visualize core scientific concepts. Their understanding of these important science concepts will expand as they:
*Build data organization skills
*Practice writing science reports
*Use reference tools
*Investigate earth and life science topics

Movie Math Mania
Gr.6-8 - Mrs. Bullock
Lights, camera, action! Students will find out about the exciting math found in popular movies through the challenging activities they encounter in this fascinating class. Students will use proportional reasoning to make props for shrunken actors, and estimation skills to find a cast away. They will watch heroes ride elevator cables to understand the concepts of integers and rates, and save a damaged submarine and a lost rocket while studying functions. Students will be starstruck by the mesmerizing activities in this original hands-on study!

Fifty Nifty Ways to Learn to Speak and Listen
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Denning
This fabulously fun class will promote the development of oral language and confidence in speaking. Students will engage in activities that build vocabulary, background knowledge, and expressive language skills through the use of props and other fun manipulatives. Active listening, and speaking activities will help to promote comprehension, and language fluency skills, as well. After fifty nifty activities, everyone will have great new skills!

Creative Drama
Grades 3-5 - Mrs. Layton
In creative drama the students will be involved in dramatic play, story enactment, imagination journeys, theatre games, music, and dance. They will become comfortable speaking in public and that will help to instill self-confidence. In addition, this kind of learning is just plain fun! Students will produce a final performance for parents and friends as the highlight to this entertaining class.

9:00-10:00 Courses:

Just for Laughs - Humorous Fiction
Grades 3-8 - Mrs. Van Solkema
No one likes to read better than when the characters are quirky and the fiction is funny, and in this class, students will have the opportunity to read five humorous novels with titles like, Don't Bug Me, Funny Man, and The Gotcha Plot. Students will not only read, but discuss, analyze and laugh! What a great way to become a more confident and fluent reader!

Pharaohs, Mummies and Pyramids
Grades 6-8 - Mrs. Bullock
This exciting class is divided into six phases called "cataracts." Each cataract focuses on different aspects of Egyptian history, culture, or geography. To navigate these divisions, students complete a series of requirements while traveling as citizens of one of five ancient cities. The culminating activity will be to participate in an Egyptian festival and living history museum.

Creative Drama
Grades 6-8 - Mrs. Denning
In creative drama the students will be involved in dramatic play, story enactment, imagination journeys, theatre games, music, and dance. CompassLearning Math
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Rumsey
Students will be preassessed by the teacher, and placed at the appropriate level in math. Students will then have the opportunity to work in the award winning CompassLearningOdyssey computer-based program. This program will take students through activities, at their own, individual skill levels that are fun, animated and interactive. Students will love to learn math through this self-paced, creative and educational program!

10:00-11:00 Courses:

Renaissance/Individualized Math
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Rumsey
Students will be preassessed by the teacher, and placed at the appropriate level. Work is computer generated. Students will move through the curriculum at their own pace. The teacher will work with individuals or small groups to teach math concepts as students progress through the curriculum. This program is excellent for reinforcing math taught at home.

Chess Club
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
Students who are interested in learning to play a friendly game of chess or who would like to learn to compete will thrive in this environment! This class will provide students with the instruction they need to play a game of chess with a friend or to get involved in broader competitions at the regional and national levels.

The Six Traits of Good Writing
Gr.3-5 - Mrs. Denning
Students will learn that the six traits of good writing include content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. They'll also learn what each of those concepts means and how to put them into action to create clear, concise pieces of writing in the various writing genres that the state standards require. In addition to all that important sounding learning, students will have a great time writing personal narratives, riddles, poems, short stories, letters and more.

Classic Tales
Gr. 6-8 - Mrs. Van Solkema
In this classic literature class, students will read, analyze and compare tales from five great American authors including Jack London's Brown Wolf, To Build a Fire, and A Raid on the Oyster Pirates; Louisa May Alcott's Tabby's Tablecloth, Annie's Dream and Onawandah; Mark Twain's A Medieval Romance, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and the Glorious Whitewasher; O. Henry's The Ransom of Red Chief, The Gift of the Magi and Jimmy Hayes and Muriel; and Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Rip Van Winkle.


11:00-12:00 Courses:

Math…Go Figure!
Gr. 3-5 - Mrs. Rumsey
One of the hardest things to do in math is read a real-life problem, and figure out how to solve it. This class will cultivate students' problem-solving skills and prepare them for standardized tests with explicit instruction and consistent practice. By the time students finish this class they will have acquired specific strategies for reading story problems and determining exactly how to write an equation to solve the problem. These are life skills that every student needs!

Real-Life Skills
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Denning
Students will learn the six pillars of character through the "Character Counts" program. They will study the meaning of respect, trustworthiness, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. In addition, through video, role-play and hands-on activities, students will learn about good manners in public situations. This is a great class for students of all ages!

Great Map Mysteries
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs.Bullock
Students will solve research-based mysteries about places that they must find with the help of a map, globe or atlas. They will learn spatial skills, how to use a compass, what a landmark and the scale for a map are, and more. This class will provide a hands-on approach to learning geography and map skills. Through the use of Tom Snyder's engaging "Where Are Where?" kit and The Learning Works entertaining "World Geography Mysteries," students will learn to enjoy studying the geography of the world.

Meet the Great Composers
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Layton
Did you know that Bach had 20 children, or that Beethoven's favorite food was macaroni and cheese? Brahms often forgot to attach his suspenders, and had to grab his pants when he conducted in order to keep them from falling down!
The lives and music of the great composers will come alive in this dynamic class. Students will learn how historical events and social customs influenced the music of these great composers, and how their music in turn influenced the people and events of the time.

12:30-1:30 Courses:

Hands-On Algebra
Gr. 6-8 - Mrs. Rumsey
"Hands-On Equations® is a visual and kinesthetic teaching system for introducing algebraic concepts to students," and it's an exciting way for students to learn difficult, new math ideas. Students love using the hands-on manipulatives that help them to easily grasp the difficult concepts that algebra presents. This class is great as a pre-cursor to Algebra I.

Real-Life Science
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
Hands-on experiments will provide students with a look into how chemists work in this fun and educational science class. From the charisma of chemistry to the dirty truth about dirt, students will learn how real-life science works to help us stay clean, smell good and keep garbage at bay.

CompassLearning Language Arts
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Layton
Students will be preassessed by the teacher, and placed at the appropriate level in language arts. Students will then have the opportunity to work in the award winning
CompassLearningOdyssey computer-based program. This program will take students through activities, at their own, individual, skill levels that are fun, animated and interactive. Students will love language arts, which include reading and writing skills, as they learn through this self-paced, creative and educational program!

Accelerated Reading
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Denning
Accelerated Reading is a computer program, which provides preassessment for placement. Students will be placed in an appropriate reading level, and will receive a list of books from which to choose their independent reading. Parents must obtain books for their own children, or students must check them out at the library. Independent reading, monitored by a teacher, is the core of the class. Students take comprehension tests in class. They are also responsible for 30 minutes of daily reading outside of class. Students will be moved through the reading levels as they show progress. Regular reports of progress will be sent home with students.

1:30-2:30 Courses:

Web Design
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Layton
Students will love learning how to create their own WebPages in this exciting new multi-media class. Using Dreamweaver, a web design program, students will learn how to add tables, text and graphics to web pages. The culminating activity will be a real life group project where students design a community service web page.

Forensic Science
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
"Using fingerprints lifted from a fictional crime scene, students become forensic scientists and learn the proper techniques to make, observe, analyze and classify everything needed to solve the mystery." This class will provide an interesting look into how science is used in the real world.

P.E.
Gr. 6-8 - Mrs. Mason
Students will work individually and in groups to develop aerobic stamina, strength and conditioning. They will learn agility, play games and enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities that help them to become physically fit individuals.

2:30-3:30 Courses:

Grammar Zone
Gr. 3-8- Mrs. Denning
Students often balk at learning grammar, spelling and punctuation but in this fun class, they will make a game out of these important skills and learn just how fun learning the conventions of language can be! Students will travel through Noun Town, Adjective Avenue, and Verb Valley and climb Adverb Bluff by working through cooperative and independent grammar exercises. Students will identify and practice using the four basic parts of speech. They will write postcards using past, present and future tense verbs; they will diagram simple sentences; use problem-solving and brainstorming techniques in collaborative work groups and develop confidence in their abilities through writing activities and a whole-class game of GRAMO.

Mavis Beacon Teaches Microsoft
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Layton
From the authors of the award winning "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing," comes "Mavis Beacon Teaches Microsoft Office." This great computer software program provides all the detail and fun of the Mavis Beacon typing program but in this case, students will learn all the secrets of Microsoft Office. Watch out, parents, students will end up knowing tricks for formatting a word processing document, inserting graphics, making a PowerPoint presentation or creating labels that even you don't know!

From Your Head to Your Toes!
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
"The human body is the most fascinating and fantastic machine in existence. No one understands all of its many mysteries; and no single source can do justice to its many parts," but in this enlightening class students will find out all kinds of mesmerizing information about our bodies and much more! Join Mrs. Bullock in this entertaining and educational class and find out the answers to these intriguing questions:
*Where are more than half of the body's bones located?
*What is the highest recorded "sneeze speed?"
*How many times does the human heart beat in an average lifetime?
*Why does a newborn baby have 350 bones, but a fully-grown adult has only 206?
*Can babies see color at birth?
*How many cells is the average adult made up of?

P.E.
Gr. 3-5 - Mrs. Mason
Students will work individually and in groups to develop aerobic stamina, strength and conditioning. They will learn agility, play games and enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities that help them to become physically fit individuals.

3:30-4:30 Courses:

Band
Gr. 3-8 - Mr. Hink
Students will learn to play a band instrument in this year-long class. Piano, guitar and other stringed instruments are not part of the band at Eagleridge. Students in the band will be required to practice independently, at home, and participate in several combined beginning and advanced band concerts, as well as playing with the band on Mondays. Band I & II meet at the same time. The first half of the class is spent on beginning band material and the second half of the class is more advanced.

Adobe Photoshop Elements
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Layton
Adobe Photoshop Elements is a great software package from the well-known Adobe family of products. With this program students will learn to:
" Show off their creativity with inspiring ideas, tutorials, artwork and templates
" Share photos in fun, interactive ways via invitation-only Online Albums
" Edit photos to add to Powerpoint presentations, cards, family letters and other fun communications

Arizona's History and Mysteries
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
From UFOs to hidden gold mines, Arizona has a plethora of fun facts, legends and stories buried in its history. Students will find out about the purported ghosts on the campus of the U of A, the "lights in sky" story and the vortices that supposedly provide a positive force throughout the Sedona area. These interesting stories will be analyzed and debated and students will decide the "plausibility" of the mysteries that permeate Arizona's weird and wacky history.
