8:00-9:00 Courses:

Science of Light and Sound
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Evans
Students will be fascinated by the science of colors, and the physics of light. They will thrill to the idea of electromagnetic waves, radio transmissions and the exploration of sight versus sound. In a class designed for hands-on experiments, students will explore how our sound and sight senses provide us with invaluable input thousands of times each day, making us better able to process and compete in this ever-changing world. This is a great class for all budding scientists who want to learn more about the human condition.

Caravans
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Denning
Students accept a challenge to form caravans and scour the world collecting museum artifacts for which they will be paid in "gold." Students complete Geographical Activities that earn their team "travel dots" that move them in the race.
Students will:
*Complete country study sheets, oral and written reports and topical study sheets related to latitude, longitude, language, culture, government and world news.
*Increase to a higher level (from Voyager to Discoverer to World Class Explorer) for every five cities visited.
*Deal with the consequences of daily "Fate Cards" which may help or hinder their travels.

9:00-10:00 Courses:

Time Travel Math
Grades 6-8 -Mrs. Rumsey
How can we use math to draw human figures with the right proportions? Can math help us to create beautiful and enduring works of art? What can we learn from the ancient Egyptians about area and perimeter? These are some of the questions that students will ponder as they travel back in time with fictional math whizzes, Harriet and Thomas, and join Leonardo da Vinci, Dutch artist M. C. Escher, and ancient Egyptian architect Imhotep, on a quest to answer a timeless riddle: How can we solve everyday problems using math?

One World - Many Cultures
Grades 3-8 - Mrs. Biehl
Students will learn about the common customs and the holiday customs from a variety of different cultures around the world. They will learn about traditional foods, songs and dances, and read favorite stories from distant lands. This will give students a better understanding of how cultures around the world are both similar and dissimilar to our own.

Reader's Theater
Grades 3-8 - Mrs. Denning
Drama is not only fun and natural for children; it also encourages emotional growth, motivation, and engagement. And one form of drama, known as Reader's Theater, has been found to be particularly effective in building reading skills. Reader's Theater can also boost listening and speaking skills, enhance confidence, and transform reluctant readers into book lovers. Once the students start, they will fall in love with this kind of reading and you will almost certainly see gains in your child's fluency, comprehension and vocabulary by the end of this class.

10:00-11:00 Courses:

Renaissance Math
Gr.3-5 - Mrs. Rumsey
Students will be preassessed by the teacher, and placed at the appropriate level. Work is computer generated. Students will move through the curriculum at their own pace. The teacher will work with individuals or small groups to teach math concepts as students progress through the curriculum. This program is excellent for reinforcing math taught at home.

Kids Throughout History
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
In this fascinating class, students will compare people's lives in the past to our lives today. They will see how history has influenced life today from clothing to food and even education. Students will have the opportunity to analyze the differences between life in the past and life today, and they'll be able to reflect on just how lucky they are to be living in the 21st century!

Chess Club
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Evans
Students who are interested in learning to play a friendly game of chess or who would like to learn to compete will thrive in this environment! This class will provide students with the instruction they need to play a game of chess with a friend or to get involved in broader competitions at the regional and national levels.

Fundamental Steps in Writing
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Denning
Students will be introduced to narrative, explanatory, persuasive, and report-of-information essays. They will learn to distinguish between concrete and abstract thinking, and general and detailed statements. They will also develop their abilities to communicate what they see, feel, touch, taste and hear in order to better provide supporting details. This class introduces students to proofreading, editing and peer feedback, as they find their editorial "voices" and become critical thinkers as well as more skilled writers.

11:00-12:00 Courses:

Accelerated Reading
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Denning
Accelerated Reading is a computer program, which provides preassessment for placement. Students will be placed in an appropriate reading level, and will receive a list of books from which to choose their independent reading. Parents must obtain books for their own children, or students must check them out at the library. Independent reading, monitored by a teacher, is the core of the class. Students take comprehension tests in class. They are also responsible for 30 minutes of daily reading outside of class. Students will be moved through the reading levels as they show progress. Regular reports of progress will be sent home with students.

Spanish
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Layton
Students will learn basic vocabulary and use of words in Spanish. They will memorize commands, and questions, and begin to learn structure and syntax. An introduction to the culture from which the language is derived will also be provided.

See the USA
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
Students will become "Travel Teams" canvassing the United States, gathering facts and features about several states along their routes. They will complete a variety of projects such as Sightseeing Postcards, Welcome Billboards and State Discovery Posters. Team members will rotate roles as Project Editor, Cartographer, Associate Editor and Graphic Designer. They will also learn to use and interpret maps, budget and manage their travel expenses, research state-specific information and more. Students unify the learning experience with a Final Project - highlighting a favorite state or point-of-interest.

12:30-1:30 Courses:

Picturing Math
Gr.3-8 - Mrs. Rumsey
In this math class for
kinesthetic learners, students will solve story problems and create their own, all with the help of pictures and math manipulatives. This concrete, sequential program helps students who struggle with visualizing math to really see the problem and solve it with the help of hands-on materials. Students will solve problems individually and in groups and learn to write their own math problems, incorporating higher level thinking skills.

Musical Theater
Gr.3-5 - Mrs. Layton
Musical theater is the art of storytelling through song, and in this class students will learn to love both music and theater by developing an understanding of musical concepts such as melody, beat and rhythm, as they practice acting, singing and working cooperatively to create a program to share with family and friends.

The Middle Ages
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Evans
Students will be immersed in the color and pageantry of the Middle Ages in this exciting simulation of European society from 600-1300. In each of eight phases, students learn about different aspects of medieval life, becoming lords and ladies, monks, knights, crusaders, serfs, and craftspeople. This is a wonderful way for students to learn the history of medieval Europe.

Political Cartoons and Cartooning
Gr. 6-8 - Mrs. Biehl
In this entertaining and timely class, students will have the opportunity to analyze the roles of symbols and holidays in society; interpret the causes of conflict in society and analyze techniques to resolve those conflicts; analyze how participation in political life leads to the attainment of individual and public goals; evaluate how individual rights may conflict with or support the common good and how independent and government agencies create, amend, and enforce regulations; judge how the roles of political parties affect an election;
analyze the impact of interest groups on the political process; and evaluate the role of media in political life in the United States.


1:30-2:30 Courses:

Musical Theater
Gr.6-8 - Mrs. Layton
Musical theater is the art of storytelling through song, and in this class students will learn to love both music and theater by developing an understanding of musical concepts such as melody, beat and rhythm, as they practice acting, singing and working cooperatively to create a program to share with family and friends.

New Atlantis
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
Students dive into an ocean of information as members of FISH (Federation for Inner Space Habitats) working on the New Atlantis project. They work in jigsaw groups to solve undersea survival problems and design two-or three-dimensional workstations that illustrate their solutions. Each team member focuses on a specific mission for the federation such as cleaning up ocean pollution or exploring hydrothermal vents. CLAM, a radical mining group, is hot to stop the project, but students can decipher clues to fend them off. By successfully beating CLAM, weathering Fate Cards and sharing their problem-solving essays, teams declare mission accomplished in their oral presentations. As outlined 15 class periods, however suggestions for shortening are included.

Computer Keyboarding & Microsoft Office
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Evans
Students will develop correct touch typing skills, using a professional typing program. Individuals will practice and establish weekly goals for speed and accuracy. This class will include both
drill and practice, and game techniques for teaching touch-typing.

P.E.
Gr. 3-5 - Mrs. Mason
Students will work individually and in groups to develop aerobic stamina, strength and conditioning. They will learn agility, play games and enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities that help them to become physically fit individuals.

2:30-3:30 Courses:

Legos-Basic Machines
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Bullock
Through the use of Legos, students will explore basic mechanical principles such as gears, levers, pulleys, wheels and axles. They will investigate and problem solve, developing tools for a purpose, and determining how they best work to serve that purpose. This hands-on class will create a real-world understanding of basic machines.

Photoshop Elements
Gr. 3-8 - Mrs. Evans
Adobe Photoshop Elements is a great software package from the well-known Adobe family of products. With this program students will learn to:
*Show off their creativity with inspiring ideas, tutorials, artwork and templates
*Share photos in fun, interactive ways via invitation-only Online Albums
*Edit photos to add to Powerpoint presentations, cards, family letters and other fun communications

P.E.
Gr. 6-8 - Mrs. Mason
Students will work individually and in groups to develop aerobic stamina, strength and conditioning. They will learn agility, play games and enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities that help them to become physically fit individuals.

3:30-4:30 Courses:

Band
Gr. 3-8 - Mr. Hink
Students will learn to play a band instrument in this year-long class. Piano, guitar and other stringed instruments are not part of the band at Eagleridge. Students in the band will be required to practice independently, at home, and participate in several combined beginning and advanced band concerts, as well as playing with the band on Mondays. Band I & II meet at the same time. The first half of the class is spent on beginning band material and the second half of the class is more advanced.
