Privacy and Security
In order to maintain student records necessary for course delivery and grade assignments, we need to store and use information that you have provided. Other records including attendance, grades, and student/teacher dialog are stored on our server so that we may complete daily tasks. In addition, user authentication records are stored. Please be aware that educational records are confidential. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of educational records.
Without your consent, we will only provide access to educational records to:
- a student or the student's parent/guardian
- to school officials or representatives with a legitimate educational interest
- or other disclosures as authorized by FERPA and district policy
To ensure confidentiality, we have implemented the following safeguards:
- All educational records transmitted over the Internet are
encrypted using the
128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This protocol encrypts or "scrambles" data sent between two points, protecting the information from unauthorized viewing. An exception to this policy is the transmission of email, which is not encrypted. - A user ID and valid password are required to access grades and other educational records.
- Access to files and records containing educational records will be restricted to authorized viewers only.
A parent/eligible student has the following rights under FERPA:
- The right to inspect and review the educational record of a student.
- The right to request amendment of an educational record to ensure that the record is not inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student's rights of privacy or other rights.
- The right to consent to disclosures of educational records contained in the student's educational record unless the disclosure is to individuals specified by law.
- The right to report violations of FERPA to the United States Department of Education.
- The right to obtain a copy of the district's policy/regulation relating to educational records.
We are committed to ensuring that all educational records remain secure from unauthorized access. Although we have taken precautions to protect your privacy, you have control of one of the most important security measures: your password! When logging in to restricted portions of the website, each user must enter a username and password to prevent unauthorized access to educational records. Anyone with a valid userID and password may view, and in some cases modify, records associated with that UserID.
To ensure the integrity of your password:
- Change your password regularly. This may be done securely from the Update page.
- Do not choose a password that others can easily guess, such as your name, birthday, or words from the dictionary.
- Memorize your password and do not write it down.
- Make sure no one watches you enter your password.
- Regularly scan your computer for viruses and spyware that could be used to capture password keystrokes.
- Do not leave your computer unattended during a session.
- Always close your browser when leaving the computer or before visiting other websites.
- To create a password, consider one of the following options: Use the first letter of each word in a favorite poem, a combination of unrelated words and numbers, or a combination of upper and lower case letters.
