About Distance Learning
Characteristics of successful distance learning students
Who is a good candidate for distance learning?
Average to above average students who are motivated to learn are good candidates
for distance learning. Distance learning courses are very demanding and are
developed to deliver 18 weeks of instruction.
What common characteristics do successful online learners share?
- Many students are attracted to online learning because of its flexibility.
It is essential for learners to possess or develop organizational
and time management skills to experience success in an online program. The
list below was developed based on those characteristics, and contains tips
to help online learners experience success.
- Set up and follow a study schedule. Keep up with the course schedule as
outlined.
- Submit your first assignment promptly.
- Communicate willingly, thoughtfully and respectfully. Contact the teacher
as soon as you have a question. Be sure to provide enough detail
in your message to allow the teacher to completely address your concerns.
Even though you may never meet your teacher face to face, you should still
speak and behave as you would in a classroom.
- Familiarize yourself with the course before beginning. Make sure you understand
the expectations.
- Follow directions for formatting and submitting assignments.
- Expect the course to be as rigorous as a course taught in
a traditional classroom. Students with a low reading ability should
expect to spend additional time on their courses. If you feel overwhelmed
